Expert English language editing for scientists

  • Communicating good science in clear, well-written English can be challenging.

Bacon Editing can help you meet the challenge of writing good science in English. I can transform the final draft of your paper into a polished text – well-structured, easy-to-read and free of errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation – that is ready for submission to your journal of choice.

I have helped many scientists and medical professionals get their work published. Read on to find out what I can do for you.

  • How can I help you?

I offer all levels of professional language editing – at competitive rates – to meet your individual needs. For starters, I can help you decide the level of editing your text requires. At Bacon Editing, I respect the author’s voice and will make sure that your writing remains your own during the editing process. Please feel free to contact me for a free personalized quote or to discuss your individual editing requirements.

    Copy editing

Copy editing removes all errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar and consistency from your text. I also suggest minor improvements to word choice and sentence structure to improve readability.

    Substantive editing

Substantive editing involves much deeper editing, with stylistic improvements to enhance readability. Often drawing on the expert knowledge I gained in my time as a research scientist, in addition to comprehensive copy editing, at this level of editing I consider the overall structure, argumentation and cohesion of your text. The result will be a clearly presented report of your research.

  • Who am I?

My name is Dr. Claire Bacon. I am a former research scientist and trained language editor who is committed to helping scientists get their research published.

Getting research published is essential for a successful academic career. This is why I am passionate about my work. I have a strong scientific background, including a Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, a Master’s degree in biology from the AO Research Institute in Davos, Switzerland, and a PhD in neurobiology from the University of York.

After completing my PhD I moved to Heidelberg, Germany, where I worked for eight years as a postdoctoral research scientist and project leader at the Institute of Human Genetics. During this time I published numerous research papers in peer-reviewed journals and started helping my German colleagues write their own papers. I realised that many talented scientists need help getting their results and ideas down on paper: it was time for a career change.

I completed professional training in English-language editing and founded my own editing business, Bacon Editing. With my writing skills, sound grasp of English-language mechanics, and deep scientific background, I have the necessary knowledge and skills to help you get your work published.

  • What my clients say...

Claire came highly recommended by her clients, and I have been working with her for four years now. She is a true professional in every sense of the word and exactly knows what a well-written manuscript needs. Her work is thoroughly well written, and always on time. It’s been a pleasure working with Claire, and I can highly recommend her.

    Dr. Giovanni Frongia

Division of Pediatric Surgery, University Hospital of Heidelberg, Germany

Claire Bacon performed a very quick and thorough editing including grammar, spelling and wording, readability, style as well as evaluation of scientific terms and abbreviations, logical issues, consistencies and plotholes. She is very confident with the scientific style and paper structure in a medical and biomedical journal. She was of great assistance including specific issues of journal style, author guidelines and requirements of this specific journal we chosedto submit the manuscript to. All corrections and comments were clearly written, consistent and comprehensible. In case of unclear and mistakable terms in the manuscript, comments included the note to check for the intended meaning. Furthermore, her service included a final approval of the manuscript right before submission. To sum up, I was perfectly satisfied with the editing service and assistance of submission. I can highly recommend her editing service for scientific manuscripts.

    Dr. Stefan Schlabe

Department of Internal Medicine, University Hospital of Bonn, Germany

Dr. Claire Bacon edited my two grant applications within only one day. Her suggested changes substantially improved the comprehensibility of the text and helped to make them more concise. I was perfectly satisfied with her very professional and constructive work and I would definitely recommend her to others.

    Dr. Henning Fröhlich

Institute of Human Genetics, University of Heidelberg, Germany

It was a pleasure to work with Claire! She was always quick to reply and did a splendid job on my manuscript. I particularly appreciated that she answered all of my remaining questions free of charge. I wholeheartedly recommend her editing service!

  • Looking for help with your research writing?

Publish or perish – the mantra that tortures every young academic trying to make a successful career. Sounds a bit dramatic, but as an ex-academic myself, I know only too well that the pressure to publish is very, very real. And that sending a manuscript out for peer review can be a daunting experience. That’s where I can help. I spend my days making sure that manuscripts are clear and easy to read before they are sent to the peer reviewer. Why is that important? Well, peer reviewers usually work for free and are not obliged to review every manuscript that lands on their desk. And nothing says ‘don’t bother with me’ more than a badly written manuscript. In this blog, I share my experiences as a language editor (and sympathetic scientist) to help you write a winning manuscript. Happy reading!
